Centre Announces ₹5,000 Crore Maritime Development Push for Northeast

The Centre has announced a ₹5,000 crore maritime development initiative for Northeast India, aimed at boosting trade, tourism, and employment. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal outlined key plans including ₹1,000 crore for inland waterways, new cargo terminals, year-round dredging, and cruise operations in Assam.

A ₹200 crore Centre of Excellence and the Maritime Skill Development Centre in Guwahati will train 50,000 youth over the next decade. The Kaladan Multi-Modal Project connecting Myanmar to Mizoram is set for completion by 2027. Other highlights include 100 barges by 2025, 10 new dredgers, 85 community jetties, ₹300 crore for tourist jetties, and Water Metro projects in major cities.

These efforts support PM Modi’s Act East Policy and aim to make the Northeast a logistics hub.
