India-US Trade Talks Stall

India-US Trade Talks Stall as Delhi Focuses on Protecting Sensitive Sectors Ahead of Tariff Deadline

India-US trade talks have stalled as India resists US demands to lower tariffs on agricultural imports like maize and soybean, citing concerns over domestic farmers and GM foods. With the July 9 deadline approaching—when the US plans to impose a 10% blanket tariff and 26% on select countries—India remains firm on protecting sensitive sectors like agriculture and dairy.

India’s agricultural tariffs average 39%, compared to the US’s 5%, fueling disputes. Despite looming tariffs, India refuses to rush or retaliate, prioritizing a fair and balanced deal.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that no deal is better than an unfair one. A fresh round of talks is expected soon to advance the proposed mini deal and a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement.
