India-Bangladesh Border Trade Hit Hard as DGFT Suspends Key Landport Operations
Cross-border trade between India’s Northeast and Bangladesh has been severely impacted since May 17, following new restrictions by the DGFT halting operations at key landports like Akhaura ICP. Hundreds of trucks have been turned back, and only limited essential goods like fish and cement are allowed through.
Major exports such as plastics, juices, and processed foods have stopped entirely. Bangladeshi exporters report daily trade losses of up to 30 lakh Taka. RFL Plastic, a major exporter, warns of unsustainable logistics costs if trade shifts to seaports.
The Tripura government held a high-level meeting to enforce the revised rules. Business communities are urging diplomatic action to restore normal trade and protect the region’s economic corridor.
