Piyush Goyal Rolls Out Logistics Plan Across 8 Cities to Cut Industry Costs

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has launched integrated logistics initiatives across eight cities to lower business transaction costs and strengthen supply chains.

The pilot program will evaluate infrastructure gaps with plans for nationwide expansion. Alongside, Goyal released a comprehensive HSN code guidebook covering 12,167 codes across 31 ministries to simplify policymaking and trade coordination.

Other key initiatives include the upgraded Logistics Data Bank (LDB) 2.0 for real-time shipment tracking, the LEADS index to benchmark logistics performance across states, and a new framework to estimate logistics costs.

For the first time, India’s logistics costs have been scientifically pegged at 7.97% of GDP, down from earlier estimates of 13–14%. The NCAER study underscores the efficiency benefits of multi-modal transport, supporting India’s ambition to become a global logistics hub.
