Gadkari calls for new highways

Gadkari calls for new highways and widening of existing ones to boost infrastructure.

The government will upgrade 25,000 km of two-lane national highways with traffic over 10,000 PCUs to four lanes, investing ₹10 lakh crore in two years, said Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. He stressed the need for new and wider highways to ease traffic and elevate infrastructure. India currently has 670 National Highways covering 1,46,204 km, with 636 projects (16,422 km) under construction, costing ₹6.35 lakh crore.

Gadkari also proposed replacing high-decibel horns with musical alternatives like flute, tabla, or harmonium to reduce noise pollution, with planned amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act to enforce the change.
