AITWA Flags Declining Truckers ROI Amid Soaring Costs, Urges Finance Ministry Action

The All India Transporters Welfare Association (AITWA) has raised concerns over declining returns for truck operators amid rising costs, urging the Finance Ministry to address structural issues in the sector. While FY 2024–25 marked a milestone with over 1.5 million trucks registered under National Permits, growth remains under 5% due to soaring truck acquisition costs and stiff competition.

Only 7.5% of India’s 20 million commercial vehicles hold National Permits, despite their importance for seamless interstate movement. Permit fees have contributed ₹2,475.75 crore to state revenues, with states like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh benefitting the most. Truck prices have nearly doubled in a decade, with compliance, maintenance, and taxation further squeezing profitability.

Small fleet owners are especially burdened. AITWA calls for GST reform and reduced compliance costs to stimulate vehicle sales, enhance logistics efficiency, and support national growth. The statement emphasizes that policy support must align with on-ground economic challenges in India’s vital road freight sector.
