Railways Launch 90-Paise Flat Freight Rate for Bulk Cement Transport
Indian Railways has introduced a uniform freight rate of ₹0.90 per tonne per kilometre for bulk cement transport, replacing earlier variable tariffs to provide manufacturers with predictable, simplified pricing.
The flat rate applies to cement moved in specialised bulk containers and removes inconsistencies related to wagon types and loading patterns.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the reform aims to reduce cement logistics costs and support home-building affordability. The new container design allows loading directly at factories and flexible terminal placement based on market needs.
The policy is expected to encourage greater rail-based cement movement as dedicated freight corridors expand, though its impact will depend on adequate bulk handling infrastructure, container availability and efficient terminal operations.
