India Enforces Truck AC Cabin Rule: Key Impacts for Drivers, Fleet Operators, and the Industry

Effective June 8, 2025, all new medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCVs) in India must have factory-fitted air-conditioned cabins. This move aims to enhance driver comfort, reduce fatigue, and improve safety, though it raises concerns over increased costs.

Truck prices have risen 1–2.5%, leading to a dip in May 2025 sales and possible freight rate hikes. Industry leaders like Tata Motors support the change, while small fleet operators express cost concerns. Exemptions exist for certain trucks, and retrofitting is allowed for pre-October 2025 models.

Despite short-term disruptions, the mandate marks a positive step toward improving driver conditions and could signal more reforms ahead. However, stakeholders stress the need for broader support and infrastructure upgrades.
