The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is driving a ₹1,400 crore investment to expand inland waterway coverage from 11 to 23 states and 4 UTs. The Regional Waterways Grid and key corridors like the 4,067 km IBP route will enhance connectivity.
Infrastructure upgrades on NW-1 and NW-2, including terminals and fairways, are underway. A ₹5,000 crore plan focuses on the Northeast. Additionally, cruise tourism is expanding, and eco-friendly vessels are being promoted under Harit Nauka and urban water metro initiatives.
