India Inland Waterways Set New Records, Revolutionizing Cargo Transportation

India’s Inland Waterways Authority (IWAI) set a new record by moving 145.5 million tonnes (MMT) of cargo via National Waterways in FY 2024-25 — a massive leap from 18.1 MMT in FY 2013-14, with a CAGR of 20.86%. The number of operational waterways rose from 24 to 29, enhancing connectivity and lowering transport costs.

Key drivers include bulk cargo movement (coal, iron ore, etc.), a 9.34% year-on-year growth, and initiatives like the JalVahak Scheme, offering 35% cost reimbursement. Digital portals now ease infrastructure approvals, encouraging private investment.

Innovations like Ro-Ro services, night navigation, and platforms like NAVIC and PANI are further accelerating inland water transport, positioning it as a sustainable alternative to road and rail logistics.
